Your Guide to Renting a Car in Zagreb City Centre
Written by Ante, Avax Rent a Car
Our Zagreb Center office is located at Ulica Kralja Zvonimira 37, in the eastern city centre near Kvaternikov Trg (Kvatrić) — a 15-minute walk or one tram stop from Glavni Kolodvor (Zagreb Main Train Station) and the main bus station. The office is open 08:00–20:00 daily and staffed on-site, so walk-ins during opening hours are welcome — no appointment needed. Ideal for travellers arriving by train or bus, city-centre hotel guests, and anyone starting a drive to Plitvice, the Dalmatian coast, or cross-border to Slovenia, Hungary, Austria, or Bosnia.
Zagreb is Croatia's capital and largest city — a compact, walkable mix of Austro-Hungarian Upper Town (Gornji Grad), lively Lower Town cafés, and one of Central Europe's best museum scenes (Museum of Broken Relationships, Mimara, Naïve Art). The funicular to Gornji Grad, the colourful tiled roof of St. Mark's Church, and the daily noon cannon from Lotrščak Tower are essentials. From October through April, Advent in Zagreb transforms the city into one of Europe's top-rated Christmas markets.
A rental car from our Zagreb Downtown office unlocks continental Croatia and four neighbouring countries inside 2 hours: Plitvice Lakes (130 km / 1h 35 min), Samobor (25 km / 30 min, famous kremšnita cream cake), Trakošćan Castle (90 km / 1h 15 min, fairytale hilltop fortress), Varaždin (90 km / 1h 10 min, baroque capital), Krapina Neanderthal Museum (55 km / 55 min), Sljeme/Mt Medvednica gondola (15 km / 30 min), Ljubljana (170 km / 2 h cross-border), and Budapest (345 km / 3h 30 min cross-border). Summer one-ways to Split, Zadar, and Dubrovnik are among our most popular routes.
Best Alternative to Taxi, Uber & Bolt in Zagreb
Both Uber and Bolt operate in Zagreb with competitive fares, so a quick Old Town transfer or ride across the Sava is cheap. However, for any multi-day stay with day trips to Plitvice, Samobor, Trakošćan, or across a border to Ljubljana or Budapest, renting from our Zvonimira 37 office is dramatically cheaper than stringing together ride-shares and organised tours. A 3-day Avax rental includes unlimited kilometres, full insurance, compliant winter tyres (Nov 15 – Apr 15), and free cross-border paperwork — typically less than two half-day bus tours.
Winter Rentals in Zagreb — Tyres & Equipment Included
Zagreb sits in continental Croatia where snow, fog, and sub-zero temperatures are common from November through March. All Avax Zagreb rentals include compliant winter tyres and an emergency kit at no extra charge from 15 November to 15 April — a legal requirement on inland motorway routes and a common surcharge point at competitors (€5–10/day). If you're driving to Plitvice in January, crossing to Ljubljana in a snowstorm, or heading to Sljeme to ski, this matters.
Nearby Attractions
Zagreb Upper Town (Gornji Grad)
The historic core of Zagreb with St. Mark's Church (colourful tiled roof), Stone Gate, Lotrščak Tower (noon cannon), and Croatian Parliament. Reach the funicular in 5 minutes from Ban Jelačić Square. A pedestrian zone — park at Importanne or Kaptol Centar garages.
Ban Jelačić Square & Dolac Market
The main square at the heart of Zagreb and the open-air Dolac farmers' market just above. Daily morning market has the best seasonal produce, cheese, and pastries in town. Most walking tours start here.
Sljeme / Mt Medvednica Gondola
A 4 km gondola opened 2022 climbs to the 1,035 m summit of Sljeme — hiking, the medieval Medvedgrad fortress, ski lifts in winter, and views over all of Zagreb. Parking at Dolje base station.
Samobor
A charming half-day trip 30 minutes west of Zagreb. Medieval castle ruins, the famous Samoborska kremšnita cream cake, and access to Žumberak Nature Park. Also the gateway to the Plešivica wine region.
Krapina Neanderthal Museum
One of the world's best Neanderthal museums, built into the hillside where 80+ Neanderthal skeletons were found. Brilliant for families. Often combined with nearby Kumrovec ethno-village (Tito's birthplace).
Trakošćan Castle
Croatia's most photogenic fairytale castle — a 13th-century hilltop fortress rebuilt in neo-Gothic style with a moat-lake and forested grounds. The single best interior-visit castle in the country. Often combined with Varaždin.
Varaždin (baroque capital)
Croatia's baroque jewel, 1h 10 min north. Perfectly preserved Old Town fortress (Stari Grad), elegant 18th-century palaces, and the Špancirfest street festival every August.
Plitvice Lakes National Park
Croatia's most famous national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — 16 terraced turquoise lakes and 92 waterfalls. 1h 35 min south via the A1 motorway. Arrive before 10:00 to beat coach-tour crowds. Open year-round; winter visits with frozen waterfalls are spectacular.
Driving Tips
Zagreb has a dense tram network — trams always have right of way and crossing tram tracks at speed can damage tyres. Drive calmly in the Lower Town grid and watch for trams on Zvonimirova, Branimirova, and Ilica. Paid parking zones are colour-coded: Zone 1 (red, ~€2/h, 2h max, strictly enforced), Zone 2 (yellow), Zone 3 (green), Zone 4 (weekdays only). Pay via mParking SMS, ticket machines, or the AZM app. For Old Town visits, use Importanne Centar, Kaptol Centar, or Petrinjska garages — avoid Zone 1 street parking unless you need <2 hours. The A1 south (Plitvice, Split), A3 east (Slavonia, Serbia), and A2 north (Slovenia) all exit within 10 minutes of our office via Slavonska avenija. Winter tyres are legally required 15 Nov – 15 Apr on inland motorway routes when signs are posted — all our rentals include them.
Our Zagreb office is well-connected to local neighbourhoods including Gornji Grad, Donji Grad, Maksimir, Trnje, Trešnjevka, Črnomerec, making it easy to reach your accommodation or explore the city and its surroundings.
