Your Guide to Renting a Car in Vela Luka
Vela Luka is the westernmost town on the island of Korčula, nestled at the head of a long, protected bay that cuts 7 km deep into the island's green interior. Often described as one of the most beautiful natural harbours in the Adriatic, the bay is sheltered from all winds and offers a peaceful, authentic alternative to the more touristy Korčula Old Town. The town is known for its warm, hospitable character, excellent local wine (Pošip), and the prehistoric cave site of Vela Spila just above the town.
Our Avax office in Vela Luka serves guests arriving by ferry from Split (Jadrolinija, 2.5 hours) or from Hvar's Sućuraj (1.5 hours), as well as those driving across the island from Korčula Town. The car is ready for collection right at or near the ferry port, eliminating any wait after a long crossing.
Vela Luka is the ideal base for exploring the western half of Korčula island. The inland town of Blato (7 km east) is surrounded by the best vineyard land on the island, producing the renowned Pošip white wine. To the south, a series of quiet coves and beaches can only be reached by car or boat. The nearby islet of Osjak and the larger Lastovo island are visible on clear days from the hilltops above town.
Nearby Attractions
Vela Spila Prehistoric Cave
A cave above Vela Luka containing one of the most significant prehistoric finds in Croatia — decorated ceramics from 17,500 years ago. The cave itself offers stunning views over the bay and the Korčula channel.
Blato and Pošip Wineries
The largest inland town on Korčula, surrounded by terraced vineyards producing the indigenous Pošip white wine. Several family wineries offer tastings, and the baroque church and loggia in the town centre are worth a stop.
Prižba Beach
A beautiful sandy and pebble cove near Žrnovo, one of the finest beaches on the island and rarely overcrowded thanks to its distance from the tourist centres. Reachable by a short dirt road.
Korčula Old Town
The island's main attraction: a perfectly preserved medieval walled city with a cathedral, palaces, and the Moreška sword dance. The drive along the northern coast road is one of the most scenic on the island.
Driving Tips
The DC116 main island road connects Vela Luka to Korčula Town in about 40 minutes. It is scenic but can be narrow through Blato and Pupnat — overtaking on blind corners is common among locals but not recommended for visitors. Off-road exploring to secluded beaches often requires a standard car with good clearance rather than a low-slung saloon. Petrol is available in Vela Luka and Blato. Note that Vela Luka has very limited parking near the ferry port in peak season — use the car parks on the edge of town.
