Can I rent a car without a credit card in Croatia?

Accepted Answer

Yes, renting without a credit card is possible at Avax Rent a Car, but it applies only to smaller car groups (Mini, Economy, and Intermediate). Availability depends on your pick-up and return location as well as the rental period. You will need to select our Premium insurance package and pay a one-time no-credit-card fee of €60. If you have a credit card, no extra fee applies regardless of the car category.

Is a deposit required for car rental in Croatia?

Accepted Answer

The deposit amount depends on your chosen insurance package. With our Start (basic) insurance, the deposit ranges from €750 to €2,500 depending on the car category — smaller cars like the Fiat Panda require €750, while premium SUVs require €2,500. With Medium insurance, the deposit drops to €250–€900. If you choose our Premium insurance, no deposit is required at all — this is Avax’s most popular option and one of the reasons we maintain a 4.7-star Trustpilot rating. The deposit is a temporary pre-authorisation on your credit or debit card, not a charge. It is automatically released within 5–14 business days after you return the car, depending on your bank.

What is the minimum age for car rental in Croatia?

The minimum age to rent a car with Avax is 18 years, and you must hold a valid driving licence for at least one year. The authorised driver must be at least 22 years old. Drivers aged 18 to 21 can still rent but a Young Driver Fee of €10 per day applies, up to a maximum of €87.50 per rental.

Is cross-border travel allowed with a rental car in Croatia?

Accepted Answer

Yes, cross-border travel is permitted with Avax rental cars. You can drive to Montenegro (popular for day trips to Kotor and Budva), Bosnia and Herzegovina (Mostar is a 2.5-hour drive from Dubrovnik), Slovenia, Serbia, Hungary, Austria, and Italy. For rentals of 3 days or more, cross-border travel to Montenegro and Bosnia is included free of charge. For shorter rentals, a cross-border permit fee of €30–€50 applies depending on the destination. You must notify us of your travel plans at the time of booking so we can prepare the green card international motor insurance certificate, which is required at non-EU border crossings. The Pelješac Bridge (opened 2022, 2.4 km long) now allows direct driving from Split to Dubrovnik without crossing into Bosnia.

What is the fuel policy at Avax Rent a Car?

Accepted Answer

Avax operates a full-to-full fuel policy. You receive the car with a full tank of fuel and return it with a full tank. You only pay for the fuel you actually use during your rental. If you return the car without refuelling, a refuelling service charge applies (typically €2.50–€3.00 per litre, above pump price). There are petrol stations within 2 km of all our airport locations — at Split Airport (SPU), the nearest INA station is on the main road toward Kaštela. Diesel and petrol (unleaded 95) are widely available throughout Croatia; average fuel prices in 2026 are approximately €1.45–€1.55 per litre. LPG is available at select stations but none of our fleet runs on LPG.

What documents do I need to rent a car in Croatia?

To rent a car in Croatia with Avax, you need three documents: (1) A valid driving licence held for at least one year — EU/EEA licences are accepted directly without additional paperwork. (2) A valid passport or national ID card for identification. (3) A credit or debit card in the main driver’s name for the deposit pre-authorisation. If your driving licence is issued outside the EU and uses non-Latin script (e.g., Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean), an International Driving Permit (IDP) is required in addition to your national licence. For licences from the USA, UK, Canada, and Australia, an IDP is strongly recommended but not strictly mandatory. All documents must be originals — photocopies or digital versions are not accepted. Additional drivers must present their own licence and ID at the pickup desk.

What is the cancellation policy at Avax Rent a Car?

Accepted Answer

You can cancel your reservation free of charge up to 48 hours before the scheduled pick-up time and receive a full refund to your original payment method within 5–10 business days. Cancellations made less than 48 hours before pickup may be subject to a cancellation fee of up to one day’s rental cost. No-shows (failing to pick up the car without cancelling) are charged the full prepaid amount. We recommend booking early and taking advantage of the free cancellation window, especially during peak summer season (June–September) when availability is limited.
