Why Rent a Car in Croatia?
Croatia isn’t a huge country, but it’s spread out in a way that makes a rental car the best way to explore. The coastline stretches over 1,100 miles from Istria in the north to Dubrovnik in the south, with hundreds of islands, national parks, and medieval towns scattered along the way.
Public transport exists but it’s limited — buses between major cities run a few times a day, and reaching islands requires ferries that operate on fixed schedules. With a rental car, you’ll have the freedom to:
- Drive from Split to Dubrovnik along one of Europe’s most scenic coastal roads (3.5 hours)
- Visit Plitvice Lakes National Park without being locked into a group tour schedule
- Explore islands like Korčula and Hvar by taking your car on a ferry
- Cross into Montenegro and Bosnia for day trips (most rental companies in Croatia allow this)
Do Americans Need an International Driving Permit?
No. Croatia accepts a valid US driver’s license for car rental and driving. You do not need an International Driving Permit (IDP), though having one doesn’t hurt if you plan to also visit neighbouring countries like Italy or Greece on the same trip.
Your regular US state-issued driver’s license is all you need when picking up a rental car. Just make sure it’s valid and not expired.
What About Insurance and Deposits?
This is where Croatia is refreshingly different from renting in the US or Western Europe.
No Deposit Required
With Avax Rent a Car, if you choose Premium insurance (full coverage), there is no deposit at all. Zero. You don’t need to block any amount on your credit card. This is unusual in Europe — most rental companies require a €500–€2,000 deposit hold.
Debit Cards Accepted
Unlike most European car rental agencies (including the big international chains), Avax accepts debit cards. You don’t need a credit card. This is a major advantage for travelers who prefer not to carry credit cards abroad.
Insurance Options
- Start Insurance — basic coverage with a deductible (deposit required)
- Medium Insurance — lower deductible
- Premium Insurance — full coverage, no deposit, no deductible
We recommend Premium for peace of mind, especially if you’re unfamiliar with Croatian roads.
What Does It Cost?
Rental car prices in Croatia are very competitive compared to the US or Western Europe:
- Economy cars (Toyota Aygo, Suzuki Baleno): from €19/day
- Compact SUVs (Suzuki Vitara): from €35/day
- Automatic transmission: available at all locations, from €25/day
Prices vary by season — July and August are peak months and prices are higher. For the best rates, book at least 2–3 weeks in advance.
What’s Included
- Unlimited mileage
- Basic insurance (CDW/TP)
- 24/7 roadside assistance
- Free cancellation up to 48 hours before pickup
What’s Extra
- GPS navigation (though Google Maps works perfectly on Croatian roads)
- Child seats
- Additional drivers (first additional driver is free with most bookings)
Driving in Croatia: What Americans Should Know
Right-Hand Traffic
Croatia drives on the right side of the road, same as the US. So no adjustment needed there.
Speed Limits
- Cities: 50 km/h (31 mph)
- Open roads: 90 km/h (56 mph)
- Highways: 130 km/h (81 mph)
Speed cameras are common, especially on highways and city entrances. Fines start at €65 for minor violations.
Toll Roads
Croatia has a modern highway system (autocesta) with toll booths. The main A1 highway connects Zagreb to Split and Dubrovnik. Toll costs:
- Zagreb to Split: ~€25 one way
- Zagreb to Dubrovnik: ~€35 one way
- Split to Dubrovnik: ~€12 one way
You can pay with cash (euros), credit card, or debit card at toll booths. No special transponder needed.
Fuel
Gas stations are plentiful along highways and in cities. Fuel costs approximately €1.50–1.70 per liter (about $6.50–7.50 per gallon). Most stations accept cards but keep some cash for smaller stations on islands.
Parking
In Split, Dubrovnik, and Zadar, parking in the old town areas is limited and expensive. Most rental companies will advise you on the best parking options near their offices. Many hotels include parking.
Cross-Border Driving: Montenegro and Bosnia
One of the best perks of renting from Croatia is the ability to drive to neighbouring countries:
- Montenegro: Many travelers drive from Dubrovnik to Kotor Bay (1.5 hours) or Budva. With Avax, cross-border to Montenegro is free for rentals of 3+ days.
- Bosnia & Herzegovina: The Dubrovnik-to-Split coastal road actually passes through a small stretch of Bosnia at Neum. This crossing is automatic and doesn’t require any special permit.
Important: Not all rental companies allow cross-border driving. With Avax, it’s included free (for Montenegro and Bosnia) with rentals of 3 or more days.
Where to Pick Up Your Rental Car
The most popular pickup locations for American tourists are:
- Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) — Most Americans fly into Dubrovnik. Our agent meets you at the arrivals exit.
- Split Airport (SPU) — Our office is a 1-minute walk from the terminal. No shuttle needed.
- Zagreb Airport (ZAG) — Meet and greet at arrivals if you’re starting your trip in the capital.
- Zadar Airport (ZAD) — Great starting point for Plitvice Lakes and northern Dalmatia.
All locations offer meet and greet service — an Avax agent will be waiting for you when you arrive. No searching for shuttle buses or remote car lots.
Tips for American Tourists
- Book automatic transmission early — manual is the default in Europe. Automatic cars are available but book up fast in summer.
- Get a local SIM card or eSIM — data is cheap (€10 for 10GB) and Google Maps works perfectly for navigation.
- Ferry with your car — you can take your rental car on ferries to islands like Korčula, Hvar, and Brač. Book ferry tickets on Jadrolinija.hr in advance during July–August.
- Don’t worry about the language — signs are in Latin script, road signs follow EU standards, and most Croatians speak excellent English.
- Round-trip vs one-way — one-way rentals (e.g., pick up in Dubrovnik, drop off in Split) are available. There may be a small one-way fee.
Why Choose Avax Over International Chains?
American tourists are used to Hertz, Avis, and Enterprise. Here’s why a local company is often a better choice in Croatia:
| Avax | International Chains | |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit | None with Premium | €500–€2,000 hold |
| Credit card | Not required | Usually required |
| Cross-border | Free (3+ days) | €50–100 extra |
| Meet & Greet | At terminal | Shuttle to remote lot |
| Rating | 4.7★ (Google) | Varies |
| Price | From €19/day | From €30–50/day |
