Road Tolls in Croatia
Croatia has tolls on its highways and motorways. The toll system in Croatia is based on distance traveled, and tolls are collected at toll booths along the highways.
When exploring Croatia it is important to seek for relevant information when driving across country. Toll collection is done in two ways: open and closed collection system. With an open system, the toll station is both an exit and an entrance, so the toll is collected immediately. It is used on shorter sections of highways and on bridges, tunnels, etc. With a closed system, a toll card is taken at the entrance, which is handed to the cashier at the exit, who charges the toll based on the length of use and vehicle category. A closed system is used on highways with multiple entrances and exits.
There is also an automated electronic cashless collection system (ENC), which works with the help of devices in the vehicle. A vehicle equipped with an ENC device does not stop at toll booths, but is automatically registered and allowed at the entrance and exit of the highway. For such a payment system, there are separate lanes at the toll stations. In addition to cash, card and ENC payment, toll payment is also possible with subscription cards (smart cards), SMS messages and via the online portal.

- The A1 is part of the European route E65, which is a major north-south European highway.
- The A1 highway is a crucial transportation artery, facilitating the movement of people and goods between the inland regions and the Adriatic coast.
- It significantly reduces travel time between Zagreb and Split compared to alternative routes.
- The A1 highway offers scenic views as it passes through diverse landscapes, including hills and mountains, making the journey more enjoyable for travelers.
- There are rest areas and service stations along the A1 highway where travelers can take breaks, refuel, and find various amenities.
- Real-time traffic information, road conditions, and any potential disruptions are often provided by the Croatian Motorways (Hrvatske autoceste - HAC) through their official channels.
Tolls are applicable on the A1 highway, and they can vary based on factors such as the type of vehicle, distance traveled, and toll booth location. Travelers using the A1 highway will need to pay tolls at designated toll booths along the route.
